What you should know about Formworks Design
Our design portfolio covers a diverse range of products utilising a diverse range of materials and processes used in their manufacture. Processes such as injection molding, rotational molding, thermoforming, as well as metal, plastic, timber and composite fabrication are all evident in our design portfolio. From the initial project scoping through to concept, development, engineering, prototyping, presentation and production management, we offer you a confidential, personalised service that responds to your specific needs. At FORMWORKS we design objects physical objects, visual objects, innovative objects, iconic objects, but above all, we design objects for you and I. Formworks will spend anywhere between a half day and a week working with client company employees. This allows us to gain a deep understanding of not only the requirements of the product but also of the client’s company culture, in order to deliver a design solution that embodies the aspirations of the client. Utilising techniques such as sketching, rough CAD modeling, basic mock ups and proof of concept prototypes, Formworks will develop a number of solutions and concept directions. With over 5o years of combined experience in the industry, our team of designers have the experience to tackle any project.
From each of these industries, we are able to take our knowledge and use it to overcome issues and constraints across a range of different fields. It is our broad knowledge and experience that will ensure that your product is designed to the highest standard and encompassing all aspects of the design process. After Graduating from Massey University School of Design in 199 with a Bachelor of Industrial Design Gareth worked at Fisher Paykel with Mechanical Engineers, Production Managers and Designers working as a team to get innovative and design lead projects out into the marketplace. In 2001 he joined the Formworks design team and has since worked on a variety of products including automotive, aeronautical, packaging, consumer, conceptual, and industrial projects.
In 2011 Gareth, along with Jamie, took over as a joint owner and Director of Formworks. Outside of the office you will generally find Gareth at any one of the numerous BMX tracks around NZ as he competes in the National Series with his kids, or volunteering at the local Waitakere BMX track. Initially working on a research project identifying styling factors and then as their in house industrial designer, a role that enabled him to build on the theoretical knowledge he had learnt at university. Jamie was responsible for designing Tait’s mobile, portable and base station product ranges.
On weekends you will find Alex cycling, running and kayaking all over New Zealand. Formworks have the expertise to take your idea from blue sky concept through to a realised and successful product. Our aim is to work alongside our clients and manufacturing partners as a team. This phase of work is integral to developing a design which is founded upon sound research and in depth knowledge of the industry.
With the proper groundwork of understanding, knowledge and experience the design process is followed throughout a project and is the reason Formworks has been recognised with so many award winning designs. Throughout the design process Formworks utilises a variety of prototyping techniques to validate our designs. The result of prototype testing is invaluable to the success of a product as multiple iterations can be analysed prior to finalising the design and investing in manufacture. By utilising 3D parametric software packages Formworks is able to design and engineer products to specific standards and enable fast and efficient revisions of data.
Knowledge of the various engineering constraints and techniques lets Formworks accomodate any defining aspects into the design earlier on the development process. With in house 3D CAD capabilities Formworks ensures that no part of the design is lost in translation or comprised, as it is the holistic approach that can define a successful product and make it stand out from the crowd. No one likes a surprise and through careful management of the production process, we aim to eliminate common areas of miscommunication and issues
